A Large-Scale Identification of Sediment-Associated Risks of Contamination with Heavy Metals and Organics: Indicators and Algorithms

Read  full  paper  at: http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=53695#.VM85jizQrzE Author(s)   Yovana Todorova * , Ivaylo Yotinov , Stilyana Lincheva , Yana Topalova Affiliation(s) Department of General and Applied Hydrobiology, Faculty of Biology, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Sofia, Bulgaria . ABSTRACT As mediators in key biotransformation processes, the complex enzyme activities (measured as a total of extracellular and intracellular activity on sub- organism, organism and supra-organism level) have a high potential to be used as reliable indicators for risk identification in co-contaminated sediments with organics and heavy metals. Two enzyme activities—dehydrogenase activity (TTC-DHA) and phosphatase activity index (PAI) were measured by use of methods with tetrazolium chloride and p-nitrophenyl phosphate in polluted sediments of Middle Iskar River part, Bulgaria. The environmental state of river sector...

Pb Isotopes Data from the Campanian Volcanic Province: A Model to Generate These Distinctive Pb Isotopic Variations

ABSTRACT A broad set of samples from the CVP has been analyzing Pb isotopes. Campanian Volcanic Province (CVP) has been produced by various ranges of mixing between three components: 1) MORB, 2) Hercynian basement and 3) upper crust. Anyhow, the upper crust that has modified the Pb isotopic composition also shows trends towards an Achaean upper crust. This is consistent for all Mediterranean area. This is not in contrast with the past plate tectonic reconstruction. Also the surface sediments (GLOSS) may have been a mixing between the Achaean upper crust and a Hercynian component with an implication worldwide due to the rock cycle pro...

ABSTRACT This pioneered study is aimed to determine the levels and distributions of organotin compounds (OTCs) in sediment samples collected from five Egyptian lakes located in the southern-eastern Mediterranean Sea. The paper has given an account of and the reasons for the widespread distribution of Tributyl...
